Yo-Yo (ヨーヨー Yōyō?) is a 16 year old Rudie living in Tokyo-to. He is a playable character and member of the GG's in Jet Set Radio.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Yo-Yo is always seen in a lime green hoodie featuring his name in black and yellow katakana (ヨーヨー / yōyō) on the front and a yellow icon on his back, a stylized mascot like version of him shaped in the hiragana (よ/yō), as well as baggy black pants with a loose belt. His skates are a very dark shade of blue with a yellow arrow pattern, wheels in more of a navy blue color, and green thrusters. Yo-Yo is a bit shorter compared to the rest of the GG's. From under his hood, orange hair is visible, as well as his rectangular sunglasses, white with red lenses.

Personality[]

Yo-Yo is described as a liar who likes to either use or sell counterfeit brands, implying him to be a deceptive person. He likes to say "yo" a lot when performing tricks and likes to do spins in the air, showing an energetic and bombastic side of him. Since he challenges the GG's to a race, he seems to value his speed. His trademark graffiti being centered mostly around himself implies he is conceited. His high graffiti stats alongside his extra-large graffiti implies he loves doing graffiti. The GBA version also indicates that Yo-Yo is prideful and cocky about his speed, his dialogue reflects this as he laughs and calls the GG's a "bunch of slow pokes".

Role in Jet Set Radio[]

After completing the Noise Reduction mission, Yo-Yo appears at the garage and challenges the GG's to a race in Benten-cho. After he's beaten, Yo-Yo decides to join the GG's and becomes a playable character. When not being played as, he sits on top of the car near the steps of the garage, presumably talking to Garam. Aside from this, his role is minimal.

Official profiles[]

Jet Set Radio Perfect Guide[]

  • Low power stat aside, he's a relatively balanced Gum-type character. He can catch a lot of air too.

Jet Grind Radio IGN Guide[]

  • This cat's skills lie in his ability to paint, and man he can paint! YoYo will earn you a lot of points for his graffiti skills. YoYo cannot carry that many cans of paint however. He is not fast so do not count on him for speed. Do not use him for hard missions that require you to run from the law. He is good to use in hoods that are off the ground like Benten where the cops cannot get to you. Recruit YoYo when you have finished Noise Reduction and Shogane Circus.

Jet Grind Radio: Sybex's Official Strategies & Secrets[]

  • With one of the lowest amounts of power in the bunch, Yo-Yo's real talent lies in his skills with spray paint. With a very high level of graffiti, you can expect that his tags are complex and rewarding on the points end. Use him for the Jet Graffiti challenges once you cleared the Story stages, but don't rely on his speed-he's one of the slower Rudies on the circuit.

Jet Set Radio GBA manual[]

  • Speed is this cat's bag. Yo-Yo is the fastest member of the GG's and he knows it.

Trivia[]

  • As his name would suggest, Yo-Yo says the word 'Yo' very often, including when pulling off tricks. Yo in Japanese can be interpreted for the word for lucky or luck.
  • Yo-Yo is one of the youngest member of the GG's, along with Corn and Mew.
  • His only air tricks are the 720, 900, 1080, and 1260. This tricks show him spin around like a yo-yo like his namesake.
  • Unlike Beat and Pots, Yo-Yo doesn't have eyes drawn underneath his glasses in his textures, similar to Garam.
  • Despite having a belt drawn onto his textures, it does not appear on his in-game model.
  • For some reason, Yo-Yo has part of Beat's goggles (mis-colored red) drawn into his textures. It is likely that they were used as a basis for Yo-Yo's shades.
  • The song "Up-Set Attack" by Deavid Soul is associated with Yo-Yo as it plays during his showdown.
  • When Yo-Yo challenges the GG's he says "yo" in a deeper tone compared to his higher-pitched voice.
  • While the Sybex and IGN guides for Jet Grind Radio notes Yo-Yo being one of the slower characters in the game, the GBA manual states he is fastest member of the GG's, showcasing inconsistency.
  • In the Japanese versions of the game, Yo-Yo's voice is more subdued and youthful sounding. In the English language versions of the game, Yo-Yo's voice is higher pitched and more energetic, with an urban slang twist to his accent that accentuates him saying "Yo!".
