Captain Onishima (オニシマ警部 Onishima Keibu?, lit. Inspector Onishima) is the Police Captain of Tokyo-to and the main villain of the first chapter of Jet Set Radio.

Onishima is shown to be exceptionally short-tempered and slightly maniacal, sending whole armed platoons after the GG's or other gangs, ranging from officers, to police dogs, to helicopters armed with missiles, to SWAT, to parachutists with machine guns.

Onishima uses a large revolver to take out gang members. According to the Jet Grind Radio manual, he hates young people, and that may be the case because of some past trauma. When the Golden Rhino's show up, DJ Professor K specifically says in a cutscene that the police force was "too scared to take on the Golden Rhino's". This may be why Onishima does not appear again after chapter 1.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Onishima is a middle-aged man, wearing a beige detective coat over a white shirt with a crumpled red tie. His pants are brown and he typically carries an oversized revolver, which parodies, as does the whole character, Clint Eastwood's character Harry 'Dirty Harry' Callahan, from the eponymous film series. Like the rest of him, Onishima's hair looks unkempt and greasy. Ironically, his hairstyle is usually associated with delinquents in Japan. According to the Jet Grind Radio manual, he is exactly 5 feet tall.

Personality[]

Onishima seems to be very on edge while doing his job despite being the captain of the police force. Whenever a rudie gets away from him or sprays his back he will yell the word "damn" and stomp in place out of frustration. He will also yell "gotcha" whenever he is in close range too. His desperation to capture the delinquents becomes concerning as he commands the parachute squad to "fill that hell-on-wheels with lead", showing his aggressiveness in the chapter 1 missions of the game. The manual for Jet Grind Radio reveals that he might have some past trauma relating to young people. According to the Japanese website for Jet Set Radio, he is also feared within the police station.

Role in the games[]

Jet Set Radio[]

In Jet Set Radio, Onishima is the main antagonistic force for the first chapter of the game. Hellbent on capturing the GG's and the fellow rival gangs, who are "terrorizing" the streets of Tokyo-to. Onishima, along with the police force, do not appear after chapter one, as according to DJ Professor K, they were too afraid to take on the Golden Rhinos.

Official profiles[]

Jet Set Radio website[]

  • Unlike the police in general, the Keisatsu organization is a ruthless and aggressive law-enforcement organization. They will do anything for the sake of the law and are extremely persistent. Onishima is the boss of the organization and is a dangerous man who, indiscriminately fires his famous riot gun without any regard for others when he gets angry. He is feared even within the police station, and is known to say, "You don't need a trial, I am the law, go to hell!" He is always spouting off lines that sound like something you've heard somewhere. He says he can survive for a week with only alcohol and cigarettes. Behind his dislike of youth is a traumatic past.[2]

Jet Grind Radio manual[]

  • With a five o' clock shadow, dirty hair, and a creased suit, this joker's obviously been watching too many 70's police shows. Watch out when he loses it 'cause he'll start shooting rubber bullets. His catchphrase is "I'm the judge and the jury and I'm gonna send you down the river." Maybe the reason he hates young people so much is because of some past trauma.

Jet Grind Radio IGN Guide[]

  • This guy is the classical bad Dirty Harry come Violent Cop. Captain Onishima is a corporate hired law enforcement official who is being paid an enormous fee to clean up the streets of Tokyo. Captain Onishima is an old traditional Japanese style man and has zero tolerance for western influenced graffiti crime invading his ichiban Tokyo. The Rokkaku Corporation picked Captain Onishima for the job because of his strict unconventional off the record lock em' up style of policing.

Jet Grind Radio: Sybex's Official Strategies & Secrets[]

  • Your main nemesis for most of Jet Grind Radio, Police Captain Onishima is dead-set on arresting your gang. He'll show up on the scene either right from the beginning or after completing certain tags, but his range of patrol is pretty limited while he's on foot. If you see him keep dashing to avoid getting smacked with one of his bullets. If he starts getting in your way, give him a good tag on the back!
