Coin (コイン Koin?) is a character from Jet Set Radio. He is an unplayable character that is only seen in still images during cutscenes. Coin is first mentioned by Cube, who tells Gum she needs the GG's help "for the sake of Coin".

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Judging by the limited view of Coin's model in the cutscenes, Coin can be seen wearing a sleeveless shirt, baggy pants, a backwards cap, and a bracelet on his left arm. He has facial hair with a goatee and sideburns. In Coin's final appearance he is shown to be wearing skates which seemingly have an arrow on them. Coin also looks shorter compared to his fellow gang members.

In the Grind City comic Coin's appearance is a bit different; his cap is now front-facing, his goatee and sideburns fully connect and instead of wearing skates, he is shown to be in normal shoes instead and he is wearing a normal t-shirt. The comic also shows him being the shortest member of the gang as well.

Personality[]

Not much is known about Coin besides the fact that he liked vinyl records, similar to Beat, but it was revealed that he had a massive collection of them, making him a collector. When Coin's collection got destroyed he was shown to be caught off guard from the disappearance of it.

In the comic, Coin is shown to be passionate about record collecting, when he added the "Devil's Contract" to his collection, Cube's disapproval of his latest addition made him respond in a stubborn manner with: "I'm not giving it away for the world!", showing some signs of carelessness and dismissiveness towards dangerous objects.

Story[]

Coin's story is narrated by Combo in flashbacks; it is explained that he was part of a gang from the Bantam Street area of Grind City, alongside Cube and Combo. One day two months before the events of chapter 2, however, the Golden Rhinos took over the area, covering everything in graffiti signs that Combo describes as ugly. To make matters worse, Coin went missing, and his large record collection was destroyed. Coin manages to leave two messages in graffiti with the first one instructing Combo and Cube to go to Grind Square and the final one telling them to head to Tokyo-to while mentioning Jet Set Radio and the GG's.

As it turned out later, Coin had amongst his collection a piece of the "Devil's Contract", an infamous cursed record Goji Rokkaku was searching for that was rumored to be able to summon a powerful demon.

Coin is mentioned again only at the very end of the game, where it is said he was "pulled too far in," and "paid a steep price." It is never explained whether this means he was killed, or simply ended up in some other unfortunate situation.

Other appearances[]

Grind City comic[]

In the Unprinted Grind City Comic, Coin makes an appearance in the first page, revealing that he is proud of his latest addition to his vinyl record collection, the "Devil's Contract". He ends up getting into a brief argument with Cube over the record and its infamy. In a later page Cube outright confirms to Combo that Coin was killed by the Golden Rhinos due to the "Devil's Contract".

Trivia[]

  • Seemingly lost in translation, or simply localized to be less violent, Coin is actually confirmed dead by Combo during his last flashback in chapter 2. On the panel above the final panel in the comic-style cutscene where Combo is explaining his and Cube's motive for getting revenge on the Golden Rhinos, the player can see what looks like Coin laying face-down, with a large, yellow spray can in front of him. The messages Coin left that Combo continually references during his flashbacks were the final tags sprayed by Coin.
