The Noise Tanks (ノイズタンク Noizu Tanku?) are a rival gang of tech-savvy Rudies found in Jet Set Radio. Their home turf is Benten-cho.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

The Noise Tanks appearance consists of a white jumpsuit, white gray skates that have tread-like wheels. Their hands are robotic like according to their artwork, but resemble gray gloves in game. They have hair sticking out from the side of their heads. They wear a gas-like mask, special yellow glasses, and a tape recorder on their chests. When tagging, the Noise Tanks bring out an extra extendable arm from their backs, removing the need to use their hands perform tags.

Personality[]

The Noise Tanks, according to the IGN guide, are described as a Rudie gang of technophile otaku who are big on not only computers, but applied cybernetic augmentation, electrical engineering, cyberpunk aesthetic, and interest in transhumanism, aiming to one day become fused as man and machine, but they also pirate software. Within Tokyo-to, the Noise Tanks rule over the nighttime district of Benten-cho. The Sybex guidebook calls the gang "fast and noisy", while the Jet Grind Radio manual describes them as "freaky high-tech dudes".[1]

The Noise Tanks are said to work underground as black market backstreet software pirates to pay for their lifestyles, and subsist on a diet of "Frankenstein foods", or manufactured foods and junk food to fit in with their gang themes. One hobby of theirs is to skate around and capture recordings of city life with their tape recorders. Outside of thrashing and spraying up the streets of Tokyo-to, the Noise Tanks are also petty tech crime misfits, being capable of controlling the electricity grid of the Benten-cho district and being capable of utilizing self made electronics to make their travel easier. They also apparently carry smoke bombs, evidenced by the beginning of two missions. One of their biggest feats was causing last month's blackout in the city.

Role in Jet Set Radio[]

In Jet Set Radio, the Noise Tanks are first ran into in Benten-cho during the Benten Boogie mission. After the GG's claim more of the Noise Tanks' turf via the Graffiti High mission, the Noise Tanks are taken down in a Tagger's Tag mission. However, if the GG's decide to go after Kogane-cho, Poison Jam's turf, first, the Noise Tanks will kidnap Pots. To which the GG's will ultimately rescue but with slight modifications done by the rival gang. When completing a second run through of the story, a Noise Tank will stop by the garage and activate the computer implant they installed on Pots to have him become a playable character. In the ending of the game it is stated that the Noise Tanks were in repair.

Trivia[]

  • The song "Yellow Bream" by F-Fields, seems to be heavily associated with the Noise Tanks.
  • Due to the Noise Tanks being able to hold 50 cans in the game, they are the only "Beat Type" graffiti user to have their character style be labeled as "Graffiti" in the Sybex guidebook.
  • In an Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine (US) issue, there is an edited piece of artwork of the Noise Tanks consisting them of wearing an orange shirt and yellow pants.[3]
  • Unlike their Jet Set Radio Future counterparts, it is never outright stated if the Noise Tanks in Jet Set Radio are robots or not. The only hint towards this is during the ending cutscene where it is mentioned that they were in repair, which leads to more confusion on who is repairing the gang.
